The Crisis in Ukraine

With the full-scale war in Ukraine, many children have been illegally abducted by Russia. With close to 20,000 Ukrainian children confirmed by the authorities, and as many as 200,000 who cannot be verified, the urgency to secure their safe return cannot be overstated.

These children have all been through a terrible experience, some being moved to orphanages while others have been adopted by Russian families. It has also been confirmed that some are being detained in children prisons. The emotional and psychological impact on these children and their families is greater than anyone could imagine.

Children reunited with their mother at the border with Belarus, after more than a year of separation.

Follow up

“After 5 months of deportation, Emile Foundation evacuated my family and my 16-year-old grand-son Artem, and found him a medical facility to accommodate his neurological condition and developmental challenges.”

Nina Medynska, Grand-mother of Artem, 16-year-old from Oleshky Children’s Boarding School

“I will forever be thankful for Emile Foundation to reunite me with my aunt after 1.5 year of deportation and witnessing the death of my mother and brother. They have found a safe place for us, found school and supported me with all I need to finally feel safe and live a near-normal life.”

Maksym, Mariupol

“The child is the victim of a war crime, and the investigator’s task is to find out about it as carefully as possible,
without traumatising the child further, so that the information can then be passed on to a Ukrainian court or the International Criminal Court.”

Olena Zelenska, First Lady of Ukraine

50 Ukrainian children have been returned home. In June 2026 our investigators traced 46 of the 84 children taken from the Oleshky boarding school.
